Barbara J. Brown, MSW, LCSW, RDT, CFSW (she/her)
“I believe connection is key when choosing a therapist! I have been described as genuine, down to earth, and easy to talk with by both youth and adults. Talking about difficult emotions and asking for help can be hard. Sometimes it may be easier and more meaningful to express yourself in more creative ways in addition to traditional talk therapy.
My versatile therapeutic approach uses cognitive-behavioral, client-centered, solution-focused, and motivational interviewing techniques to draw out your strengths and passions. I integrate creative approaches to therapy (such as theater/movement, visual arts, and music) while focusing on both empowerment and positive changes.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Registered Drama Therapist (RDT) offering a creative perspective on your situation. Both my BA and MSW are from Winthrop University with an additional graduate certificate in Management. Additionally I am a Certified Financial Social Worker (CFSW) and able to integrate financial health and wellness into therapy.
I look forward to hearing from you and supporting you!”

What is Drama Therapy?
Drama therapy is the intentional use of drama and/or theater processes to achieve therapeutic goals. Drama Therapy is an active, experiential approach to facilitating change. Through storytelling, projective play, purposeful improvisation, and performance, participants are invited to rehearse desired behaviors, practice being in a relationship, expand and find flexibility between life roles, and perform the change they wish to be and see in the world.

What is Financial Social Work?
Financial social work is a psychosocial and behavioral approach that combines social work principles with financial guidance to address the emotional and psychological aspects of money management. It focuses on how a person’s thoughts, feelings, and past experiences influence their financial habits, aiming to reduce stress, anxiety, and shame while building healthier financial behaviors and self-reliance. This field goes beyond traditional budgeting to help individuals and families heal their relationship with money and gain control over their lives through education, motivation, and support. “If you are reading this and are navigating significant challenges and struggles or just want to untangle the seemingly small stuff, welcome and thank you for reaching out!
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Work (LCSW) with experience working with a diverse range of clients in schools, private practice and integrated behavioral health care settings. I am here to offer support through a variety of challenges you may be experiencing, be it trying to understand yourself and others, making sense of changes within or outside of your life, or just wanting to feel better than you currently do.
In my work, I take a warm, interactive, empathic, non-judgmental and supportive approach and prioritize creating a space where it is easy to share. I apply mindfulness-based techniques, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing and trauma informed care in my practice; I am EMDR trained (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). I also encourage various forms of creative expression in the therapy process.
As a firm believer that we all have solutions to life’s problems, my role is to collaborate with you as you figure out what remedies best fit the changes you are ready to make and to work with you in developing a deeper trust in yourself.
I look forward to working with you!”

What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy designed to alleviate distress associated with traumatic memories and other adverse life experiences. It is widely recognized by major health organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association and the World Health Organization, as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
How Does EMDR Work?
The theory behind EMDR, the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, posits that traumatic events can be stored in the brain in an “unprocessed” or “dysfunctional” way, disconnected from the brain’s natural healing and information-processing systems. When triggered, these memories can manifest as intense emotions, physical sensations, and negative beliefs, making a person feel as though they are reliving the event.
EMDR therapy aims to “unfreeze” these memories and help the brain reprocess them, allowing for normal healing to resume.
Trauma, according to the APA (American Psychological Association) is “Any disturbing experience that results in significant fear, helplessness, dissociation, confusion, or other disruptive feelings intense enough to have a long-lasting negative effect on a person’s attitudes, behavior, and other aspects of functioning…”Trauma can negatively impact the way we view and understand ourselves, but trauma doesn’t have to remain within us; think of trauma as a splinter wedged under the skin, waiting to be removed. Trauma-based therapies, such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), are designed to help us explore the root cause of trauma, resolve it, and replace the negative trauma-related sense of self with a positive, resilient and empowered sense of self, providing an opportunity for relief (much like when that splinter is finally pulled out from under the skin).
